Designer Bio

RICHARD COLEMAN III

DESIGN, TAILORING, STITCHING, PATTERN MAKING, ILLUSTRATING

“With extensive technical background in both fashion and costume, Richard’s professionalism, precision and skill are far beyond his years.”

Ever since Richard was a small boy, his love for art, drawing and dressing up exuded everything he did! Throughout his childhood, Richard attended Waldorf Steiner school, and this is where his creative talents were first nurtured. In Eighth Grade, Richard was invited by his school to design and make all the costumes for the school play Molière’s ‘Tartuffe’. With his love for costuming and 18th century exuberance, Richard’s costumes were a huge success! From this time on, Richard took every spare moment to experiment and develop his creativity with fabrics and costuming, taking any opportunity he could find to further develop his knowledge and skills.

In 2010, Richard was awarded a half tuition scholarship to attend Illinois Institute of Art Chicago. During his time there, Richard was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes for excellence in fashion, including the Driehaus Design Initiative and Silver Award winner in the Art Institute fashion show 2014. While studying, Richard worked for the Borris Powell fashion label and a leather company, West Coast Leather, designing and contributing to future collections.

After graduating in 2014 with Bachelor Fine Arts - Fashion Design, Richard immersed himself in the Chicago costume and fashion industry by starting his own small business, RCIII, and securing a position at Halsey Onstage costume company. His job as lead stitcher, further developed his passion and love for design through his work with ballet, opera, film, music, theater and workshops.

“Richard excels in flat-patterning, draping, stitching, tailoring, fitting, stretch-ware, crafts, classical tutus, romantic tutus and millinery. His talents extend to a multitude of finishing and embellishing techniques, including beading, featherwork, smocking, leatherwork and appliqué to list a few.”

Richard currently maintains his own small business working on commissions and teaching workshops. He also enjoys working in the costume department for the world renowned company, Glyndebourne Opera House. He lives in East Sussex, South East England with his husband and their dog Shyloh.
